Why Trees?

Trees are the unsung heroes of our planet. They quietly absorb and lock away carbon from the atmosphere over their lifetimes. In a world where carbon emissions pose a significant threat, trees are one of the best tools we have to combat this issue. But they don't just plant any trees; they carefully select our tree planting partners and projects to ensure that the impact is both meaningful and sustainable.

Ensuring Tree Survival

One of the first questions that may come to mind is, "What's stopping someone from cutting down the newly planted tree?" It's a valid concern, and Ecologi take it seriously. They work closely with organisations like Eden Reforestation Projects, which secure written agreements with governments designating restoration sites as protected in perpetuity.

They also hire local villagers to plant the trees, creating an economic incentive for them to ensure the wellbeing of the restoration project. These villagers develop a sense of ownership over the trees and the restored forest, protecting it with great care. Additionally, a minimum of 10% of the trees planted are agroforestry species, providing food security and legitimate human needs, thereby creating a sustainable source of income.

Mangroves: A Powerful Choice

You might wonder why so many of the trees are mangroves. The answer lies in their remarkable carbon sequestration capacity. Scientific studies have shown that mangroves can sequester carbon at rates two to four times greater than mature tropical forests. They are also crucial components of coastal ecosystems, offering services such as fisheries support, sediment regulation, and storm protection.

Survival Rates and Natural Regeneration

The mangrove restoration projects boast an initial survival rate exceeding 80%. Between years three and five, young mangrove trees begin producing their own propagules, leading to natural regeneration. This phenomenon results in an impact ranging from 150% to 500%. Ecologi are highly selective in choosing partners who actively work to secure these high survival rates.

Beyond Carbon Sequestration

While carbon sequestration is a critical aspect of the tree planting initiative, it's not the only goal. Ecologi adhere to the highest verification standards when purchasing carbon credits, ensuring that our contributions have a real and measurable impact on reducing carbon emissions.

Protecting Indigenous Communities

Ecologi are committed to ensuring that indigenous communities are protected and actively involved in our projects. For instance, in Madagascar, the partners at Eden Reforestation Projects work with the explicit permission of indigenous landowners and the government. Local communities benefit from the projects in various ways, such as job creation, access to fruit harvesting, and economic benefits from restoring deforested land.

Fair Wages and Community Empowerment

Ecologi's partners at Eden Reforestation Projects have a mission to provide fair wage employment to impoverished villagers, empowering them as agents of global forest restoration. By hiring local communities to grow, plant, and guard native forests, they address extreme poverty, provide consistent income, and restore the environment. Workers receive fair wages, government-mandated benefits, and opportunities for personal and community development.
