Today, we’ve been working on installing a Bravo Snorkel onto a VW T6.1. It’s a job you can do at home if you’re confident with tools and have a bit of patience though it’s definitely easier with access to a workshop and the right equipment.  If you love taking your VW Transporter off the beaten path or simply want to prepare for those unpredictable floods and wet roads, fitting a snorkel is a smart upgrade. Not only does it look great, but it also helps protect your engine when driving through deep water or dusty terrain. Once you start going Swamper you won't stop.. First up Snorkel, next stop Swamper Alloys. There’s something undeniably tough-looking about a VW Transporter with a snorkel. It instantly gives off that rugged, adventure-ready vibe like it’s just waiting to tackle muddy trails or splash through flooded lanes. But beyond the looks, a snorkel can actually be really practical. It raises your air intake point higher up, helping your engine breathe cleaner air in dusty or wet conditions. And if you live somewhere that floods regularly (like we do!), it can make a big difference when the roads turn into rivers. Today, we fitted one of these to a VW T6.1, and while it’s not the easiest upgrade out there, it’s definitely something you can do yourself if you’ve got the tools, a bit of patience, and maybe a friend to lend a hand. Before You Start This is one of those modifications that’s best planned out before you touch a single bolt. You’ll need a few key tools, including a hole saw (we used a 102mm one), a jigsaw or nibbler, basic hand tools, and a clear, flat workspace. If you’re not completely sure about doing it yourself, don’t worry it’s always okay to ask for a bit of help. And if you have questions, you can reach out to us in the comments or message us directly for advice    Getting Started: Tools, Space, and a Bit of Confidence Before you start cutting holes in your van (yes, that’s part of it), make sure you’ve got a decent workspace and the right tools. You’ll need: A 102mm hole saw A nibbler or jigsaw A socket set and basic hand tools A drill Plenty of masking tape and marking tools Having access to a workshop makes life much easier, but if you’re doing this at home, just take your time and plan each step carefully. This gives you access to remove the front scuttle panel, which needs to come off before you can reach the air intake area. Once that’s out of the way, disconnect the air filter box. It sounds more complicated than it is just a few clips and bolts but it’s essential because the snorkel connects directly to this part of the system. Step 2: Find Your Cutting Point With the air box out, you’ll see exactly where the snorkel will feed through the van’s bodywork. This is where things get interesting. You’ll need to mark and cut a hole through both the inner and outer panels. Don’t panic as long as you measure carefully, it’s straightforward. The snorkel kit usually comes with a template to help you line it up properly. The tricky part is that it’s not a perfect circle it’s slightly oval-shaped, so precision is key. We start by cutting the bulk of the hole with a 102mm hole saw, then tidy up the edges using a nibbler or jigsaw. This combo gives a neat, factory-looking finish. Step 3: Fit, Check, and Reassemble Once your opening is cut and clean, it’s time for a quick test fit. Slot the snorkel into place and make sure everything lines up correctly before you start bolting it down. After that, reconnect your air box, refit the front panel, and pop the windscreen wipers back on. And that’s it, your snorkel’s in! Why Bother Fitting a Snorkel? Some people think snorkels are purely cosmetic. Others swear by them. The truth is probably somewhere in between. If you regularly drive through flooded areas, muddy tracks, or dusty countryside roads, a snorkel is a genuinely useful addition. It keeps your air intake higher and cleaner, helping protect your engine from water and debris. But even if you never leave the tarmac, it’s hard to deny, they just look great. How to Fit a Vamoose Awning Rail to a VW T5 or T6 Campervan: Step-by-Step Guide

If you own a VW Transporter T5 or T6 Campervan and want to fit a Vamoose awning rail, you don’t need to take it to a workshop. It’s a straightforward job that you can do yourself in under an hour, as long as you’ve got a steady hand and a bit of patience.  This guide walks you through exactly how to fit the Vamoose awning rail properly, based on the method we use in our own workshop when converting vans for our customers. What You’ll Need Before you start, make sure you’ve got everything ready. The Vamoose kit comes with almost everything you need, including: Awning rail (keep it in the plastic until fitting to avoid scratches) Front flexible nose cone Rear guard 3M adhesive strip (on the front cone) Screws — both black (final) and silver (temporary self-drilling) Polyurethane sealant with nozzles Alcohol wipes Gloves You’ll also need a few basic tools: Drill driver with a long bit holder Masking tape Pencil and tape measure Box cutter Blue roll for cleanup Step 1: Preparation Start by taping off the seams above the doors and windows. This isn’t in the manual, but it’s worth doing. It stops metal swarf from falling into the panel gaps when you drill — the last thing you want is trapped metal rusting over time. Unpack your rail, separate your screws (silver for drilling, black for final fitting), and lay everything out where you can reach it easily. Step 2: Mark Your Starting Point Measure 430mm (43cm) from the seam where the two body panels meet at the front of the van. Mark this spot with masking tape and a pencil — this is where your awning rail will start. When you hold the rail up, you’ll want around 5mm of space between the shoulder of the rail and the top of the sliding door frame. This ensures the fit looks clean and consistent. Step 3: Drill and Fit the Rail Get a second pair of hands to help you lift the rail into position. Once it’s lined up, use the silver self-drilling screws to fix the rail in place temporarily. Start from the front and work your way towards the back. The van curves slightly, but the aluminium rail will bend naturally as you go — just guide it into shape. Don’t overtighten. Once the screws are in, remove them again to prepare for sealing. Step 4: Clean and Seal Before sealing, get rid of any metal filings. Blow them off or wipe them down — you don’t want them scratching your paint. Use the alcohol wipes to clean both the van surface and the back of the awning rail. This removes any grease or residue so the sealant can stick properly. Apply a small blob of sealant into every screw hole, then run a continuous bead along the back of the rail. Step 5: Final Fit With your sealant in place, line the rail back up to the screw holes and secure it using the black screws. As you tighten, sealant should squeeze out slightly — that’s a good sign you’ve got full coverage. Wipe away any excess with blue roll or an alcohol wipe before it dries. Step 6: Fit the End Caps The front nose cone has 3M tape — peel, stick, and press it firmly into place. The rear cap doesn’t, so you’ll need to score the back of it lightly with a blade to give the sealant something to grip. Apply sealant to the back, fit it in place, and run a smooth bead around the edges for a watertight finish. Mask around it before sealing to keep things tidy, then remove the tape once it’s smoothed off. Step 7: Finishing Touches Once the sealant’s set, give the whole area a final wipe down. You can add an extra bead of sealant across the top of the rail if you want extra protection from water ingress — it’s optional, but worth doing. The Vamoose rail doesn’t just hold your drive-away awning — it also acts as a rain gutter, stopping water from dripping into the van when you open the door. Many people even fit them on both sides for this reason. Drill pilot holes – Start small and work up to a 9mm drill bit. Install rivnuts – Insert and secure them using a rivnut tool. Apply sealant – Add sealant to the threads for a watertight fit. Secure the bracket – Use M6 Allen cap bolts and washers to fasten it in place. Step 5: Installing the Rear Bracket Measure back 1.6m from the first bracket. Follow the same steps as the front bracket installation. Ensure alignment so the awning sits evenly on the van. Step 6: Attaching the Awning Hook the awning into place – The top of the bracket has a hook that slides into the profile on the back of the awning. Secure the bottom – The base of the awning rests on the bracket shelf. Drill pre-drilled holes – Use the bracket’s holes as guides to drill into the aluminum casing of the awning. Bolt it in place – Wind out the awning slightly, then secure it with bolts and nuts. Final Check and Testing Ensure all bolts are tight. Check that the awning extends and retracts smoothly.
